HANCOCK COUNTY, W.Va. — The Hancock County Board of Education went into executive session Monday to discuss a pending grievance filed against the board.
"She came to me and we filed a grievance with the Public Employees Grievance Board based on favoritism and pre-selection,” Alex Risovich, of Risovich Law Offices, explained.
Risovich represents the employee that filed the grievance against the board alleging that favoritism occurred during the hiring process for the district’s director of personnel. The administrative law judge who dealt with the case agreed.
"The administrative law judge then, based on that finding, said that the job of director of personnel should be reposted within 30 days and that then they should hire the most qualified candidate."
The board met and discussed the matter Monday night in executive session.
“The board, on Monday, then decided, rather than do that, they will spend more money to hire a lawyer to appeal that decision so that they don't have to repost the job and hire the most qualified candidate.”
NEWS9 reached out to the attorney representing the board of education in this case who declined comment.
“I would have a lot of concern for that, as well,” Risovich said. “I don't think that's the best use of public funds for students in Hancock County."
The board has 30 days to officially appeal the decision.
