BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) — On Tuesday night, the Berkeley County School Board fired Deon Jackson as superintendent and hired Dr. Anthony Dixon.
Jay Bender, a media attorney, said he believes the board's actions in that meeting were illegal.
"What this school board has done is destroy any potential credibility it might have had for itself," said Bender.
Bender said the meeting raised a lot of legal concerns.
"It appears there was a meeting for which no notice had been given in which was not convened in public, at which board members decided to get rid of the superintendent and hire a new superintendent," said Bender.
Bender said the board should be questioned whether it held a search for the superintendent.
"If there was a search then it was conducted illegally, because it was not authorized by a public vote. My guess is there was no search. If one were to ask for the material collected regarding the group from which the final selection [for superintendent] was made, the district won't have anything to show for it," said Bender.
We pulled the agenda from Tuesday night. There was no mention of the superintendent's position being discussed.
"This school board acted, in my view, illegally by failing to adequately state the purpose of its executive session, and then without there being an item on the agenda, came out and fired the incumbent superintendent," said Bender.
The board voted 6-1 to hire Dr. Dixon and fire Deon Jackson.
