FOXBOROUGH, Mass. —
New England Patriots' superstar wide receiver Stefon Diggs made a brief appearance in a Massachusetts courtroom Friday, facing charges that he assaulted a private chef last year.
Diggs was originally scheduled to be arraigned on charges of felony strangulation or suffocation and misdemeanor assault and battery charges on Jan. 23. That hearing was postponed until Friday, less than one week after Diggs and his teammates were defeated in Super Bowl LX.
On Friday, the judge set a pre-trial hearing for April 1. He remains free on personal recognizance and was ordered to stay away from the victim.
The receiver made no comments as he was whisked away to a waiting SUV outside the court by his legal team. His defense team has categorically denied the allegations.
"He is completely innocent of these false allegations that have been alleged against him, and we’re confident that after the facts and evidence are reviewed in this case, he will completely exonerated," said defense attorney Mitchell Shuster.
The court granted the defense's motion that the victim turn over text messages from Dec. 2, the day of the alleged assault. The defense alleges in a motion that the victim altered and deleted some messages provided to investigators to support her "narrative." The defense also claims the argument was not about money, but that the victim lost the trust of her employer and feared losing her job.
