KOTA KINABALU (June 20): Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Central Information Chief Nicholas Ban has lodged a police report over the spread of false information on social media linking the party to the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) case.
He said the report was lodged here together with LDP Youth Chief Loong Kok Seng and several members of the party’s Youth wing after they discovered fake accounts and misleading posts attempting to associate LDP with the 1MDB scandal, thereby tarnishing the party’s reputation and misleading the public.
Ban said the allegations were entirely baseless, noting that the matter had already been resolved through legal proceedings and a High Court ruling in 2019.
“The High Court accepted the explanations and evidence submitted by LDP and subsequently ordered the lifting of the freeze on the party’s bank accounts, as well as the return of the majority of the frozen funds.
“The ruling proved that the money had no connection with 1MDB and that LDP was not involved in any wrongdoing related to the case,” he said in a statement.
He stressed that despite the issue having been settled years ago, certain parties were still attempting to distort the facts and spread false information to create a negative perception of the party.
“The act of spreading slander and false information is irresponsible. We view seriously any attempt to mislead the public and damage the party’s reputation through fake accounts or malicious posts,” he said.
