Leaders of Four Congressional FEMA Oversight Committees Seek Official Action to Protect FEMA Whistleblowers

Ranking Members send a joint letter to the US Office of Special Counsel (OSC) regarding ongoing retaliation against Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) employees

WASHINGTON—Today, three public interest organizations supporting FEMA whistleblowers who signed The Katrina Declaration—Government Accountability Project, Lawyers For Good Government and Stand Up For Science—applauded the recent Congressional letter protesting FEMA’s gross mishandling. Merely for signing the Declaration, a dissent letter, FEMA employees were put on indefinite administrative leave and subjected to disciplinary investigations. They were reinstated after the investigations closed with no disciplinary action. Political appointees then reversed the reinstatements without any new evidence of wrongdoing.

On December 17, 2025, the Ranking Members of the House Committees on Oversight and Government Reform, Homeland Security, Transportation and Infrastructure and its Subcommittee on Public Buildings, Economic Development, and Emergency Management, wrote to OSC “with alarm” about the mistreatment of employees who exercised their legal rights to make protected whistleblower disclosures. The letter states:

We expect that the Office of Special Counsel will find clear evidence of whistleblower retaliation, reinstate the FEMA employees, and pursue disciplinary action against all...
