Cari Wencewicz will be the interim principal at Leclaire Elementary School until the Edwardsville District 7 Board of Education takes further action on Donald Gunter's employment with the district.
At its Aug. 24 meeting, the board approved Wencewicz’s employment as interim principal at Leclaire Elementary.
The board approved item 10.11 after Brittany Ottaway, a cross-categorical teacher at Leclaire, addressed the board and called for Gunter’s return. Six other people wearing Leclaire gear attended in support of her call for Gunter’s return.
Ottaway called for the board to "bring our leader home" and compared Leclaire to a family. She said Gunter was responsible for supporting teachers and making Leclaire a good place to work.
In the days leading up to the start of the school year, Leclaire Assistant Principal Cari Wencewicz took over Gunter’s responsibilities.
The appointment comes after teachers, staff and community members called for the Board of Education to terminate Gunter at the Aug. 10 meeting.
Seven community members, led by the Edwardsville Education Association, addressed the board with the same message. EEA co-president Carla Kinsey said, “all staff and students in this community (should know) that harassment, intimidation and abusive conduct have no place in District 7.”
