President Lee Jae-myung proposed raising the reward payment ratio under the current Act on the Protection of Public Interest Whistleblowers related to hoarding and cornering from "up to 10% of the amount recovered" to around 30%. He said the reward for reporting should be increased to root out market-disrupting behavior, and there must be strong measures against hoarding and cornering.
On the 6th, Lee said, "The government should not have a government-centric mindset. If government crackdowns are legitimate, why can't the private sector report?" He added, "We are too stingy with the reporting reward system. I don't understand why."
After receiving a briefing from Chairperson Jeong Il-yeon of the Anti-Corruption & Civil Rights Commission (ACRC) on the general provisions of the reward system under the Act on the Protection of Public Interest Whistleblowers, Lee said, "The reward level seems far too low," and added, "Raise it (for hoarding and cornering) to 30%, like reports of stock price manipulation." He went on, "There's no reason not to do it," and said, "Why can't we give the private sector more than 10%? Ultimately, it's a legislative decision, but Korea being a Confucian country seems to have a mindset that 'reporting is immoral.'"
