EDWARDSVILLE — Madison County taxpayers have paid more than a quarter-million dollars in legal fees to defend against more than a dozen “failed” lawsuits filed by two former county employees, Doug Hulme and Rob Dorman, according to Madison County State’s Attorney Tom Haine.
The figure comes as the two, who were terminated by the county in April 2020 after allegations of impropriety, refiled one of their lawsuits last month and successfully petitioned the court to move the case to another judicial circuit.
“It’s a sadly typical case of frivolous lawsuits driving up costs for taxpayers,” said Haine in a released statement Tuesday. “I hope it stops soon, so local taxpayers don’t continue to suffer this waste of resources merely to ward off meritless lawsuits by just two individuals.”

Haine said that, as of mid-August, the county’s legal fees to defend against the litigation filed by the two stood at $271,568.43.

Hulme countered that Haine’s statements were meant to support Madison County Treasurer Chris Slusser in his primary challenge of county board Chairman Kurt Prenzler.
Dorman said Haine's statements were in response to their refiled suit being moved to another judicial circuit.
