LETTER: Columnist uses false statements in bid to defend Trump - Rome Sentinel

The opinion piece in the June 16 edition of the Daily Sentinel by Ben Shapiro brings “whataboutism” to a new level. His main point is that since Hillary Clinton was not indicted for mishandling classified information, then Donald Trump should not either.

Clinton did not take classified materials or refuse to give them back when asked. She did discuss classified subjects in some of her emails (which is very easy to do as a secretary of state) and she did it on her private email server. For that, although never indicted, she paid a significant price during the 2016 election. Then, Shapiro alleges that a whistleblower revealed that the Biden family received millions of dollars in exchange for favors done while he was vice president, speaking of it as a fact.

Yet even after four years of investigations during the Trump administration and the continuing DOJ investigation, no evidence to support these claims has been found. Now, even some MAGA congressmen are starting to doubt such evidence exists.

Then Shapiro concludes that since there has been no DOJ prosecution of leading Democrats, that even the egregious acts by Trump, which Shapiro attributes to Trump’s epic narcissism and foolishness, should not be prosecuted. With that kind of reasoning, how can you expect others to avoid such behavior in the future? The First Amendment gives Shapiro the right to make false statements to support his bogus opinions, but it does not obligate the Sentinel to publish them. However, the...
