Rep. Panetta’s supporters are once again using McCarthyistic attacks against peace and human rights activists who oppose his unconditional support for Israel’s far right government. In the latest broadside, a letter writer has falsely accused me on these pages of somehow opposing Israel’s right to exist because I oppose the Israeli occupation and Netanyahu’s racist policies.
The letter writer even claims that my opposition to the occupation has somehow encouraged a “climate of hate and fear for Jewish students on campuses.” I really think that after 28 years of teaching in the Jewish Studies Program at the University of San Francisco and serving for most of that period on USF’s Jewish Studies Committee, I would have heard by now if I was actually contributing to such a climate.
I have similarly been falsely accused of being an “imperialist” for opposing the Russian occupation of Ukraine and a “paid Algerian agent” for opposing the Moroccan occupation of Western Sahara.
Panetta and his supporters must recognize that one can oppose repressive military occupations without opposing a country’s right to exist.
