Letters containing substance triggers lockdown at state attorney’s office in downtown Jacksonville - WJXT News4JAX

Employees were held inside as investigators tested substance

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Letters that were sent to the State Attorney’s Office, Fourth Judicial Circuit in Downtown Jacksonville on Tuesday are being investigated at a laboratory, according to the FBI.

A spokesperson for the State Attorney’s Office described it as a “flaky substance” that was identified.

JFRD said it called in it’s hazmat team, and investigators said no one was permitted to leave the building until they determined what the substance is. A spokesperson for the State Attorney’s Office confirmed around 6:45 p.m. that employees were permitted to leave, but details as to what the substance was were unclear.

A spokesperson for the FBI said the Jacksonville office, U.S. Postal Inspector, Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department were all helping with the investigation.

“We are working with our partners and the SAO to ensure the safety of all employees as we expedite the testing process,” the FBI said in a statement.

JFRD had streets around the building blocked, and people who were in the building were getting checked over by first responders. Streets affected by the closures included Duval, Pearl and Julia.
