Linden approves agreement to retain police officers | News for ... - Tri-County Times

Linden — Linden officials are hoping to retain, and maybe attract, officers in the city.

On Monday, June 12, the Linden City Council approved a letter of understanding between the city, the Linden Police Officers Association (LPOA) and the Police Officer Association of Michigan to increase police pay and amend the health policy for police employees.

The city and the Linden Police Officers Association requested that police employee wages be brought up to the 2024 wage level in the LPOA contract.

Additionally, police employees will not be required to contribute 15% toward the city provided health insurance plan. The cost to the city would be approximately $31,626.

“We’re seeing less and less people going into law enforcement…There’s hundreds of jobs out there right now and the competition is intense,” said Linden Police Chief Scott Sutter. “This is not to bring in new employees; it’s to retain employees, too.”

The Linden Police Department currently has three full-time officers, one sergeant, one school resource officer, the chief, and four part-time officers. They are down one full-time position after an officer took a position with another department. Sutter said they are seeking to fill this position.

City Manager Ellen Glass said they’ve seen this situation transpiring in the policing industry and they met with the police union to brainstorm ideas to make Linden’s policing positions more attractive.

Recently, a Linden officer accepted a job with another police agency.
