It’s all over social media! Videos by influencers are targeting sunscreen use. Some even claim it causes cancer. The videos are permeating society and upending social norms.
We shared the videos to Primary Care Physician Dr. Sergio Alvarado from We Care Clinic to get his take on the videos.
Alvarado’s reaction, “Alarming and disappointment. Sometimes I think a lot of the influencers they want to get that up vote and they’re going to go with statements that are shocking.”
Some influencers claim that the sun provides Vitamin D, which is true, but that the Vitamin D that you get from the sun will protect you from getting cancer adding that sun exposure actually protects you from cancer.
“The evidence has been there for years, exposure to UV rays is carcinogenic,” explained Dr. Alvarado.
In a study published in the Journal of Medicine, it shows melanoma is the deadliest type of all skin cancers and linked to UV radiation exposure in nearly 95% of all cases in the United States. It’s potentially preventable, because diagnoses are associated with “excessive sun exposure and indoor tanning.”
“Every hour there’s two people that die in the U.S. from skin cancer… Just having five sunburns in a lifetime doubles your risk of Melanoma,” Alvarado warned.
Some influencers may have the right idea, do your own research but focus on what the experts are saying.
