LOUISVILLE, Ky. —
More Louisville health professionals have been criminally charged as a part of a federal healthcare fraud crackdown.
New indictments come days after Angela Renfro, Briana Gosnell, and two Louisville-area businesses, were indicted last Thursday.
The two women are accused of submitting more than $11 million in fraudulent and unauthorized Medicaid claims and identity theft. You can read more about their cases here.
On Wednesday, United States Attorney Kyle Bumgarner of the Western District of Kentucky announced more charges against three more people connected to Louisville.
Dr. Christian Berkhahn, of Louisville, is a pediatrician. He has been charged with conspiracy to obtain controlled substances by fraud or deceit and health care fraud.
He allegedly used his DEA number to order controlled substances, including oxycodone, in others’ names.
Officials said those controlled substances were paid for by Medicare.
Einar Serrano Reyes, of Florida, has been charged with conspiracy to commit health care fraud, health care fraud, and aggravated identity theft.
The DOJ said he entered a lease agreement for JL Serenity Center LLC for a building in Louisville and then credentialed that same LLC with Medicare to bill for medical services, hiring a physician to supposedly oversee medical treatment.
However, Reyes used the doctor's NPI number to bill Medicare for services that never happened, the DOJ said.
