Once again Elise Stefanik uses incomplete information, inaccurate statements and scare. Her recent guest viewpoint, “Hochul must stop attacks on the Second Amendment”, was misleading and full of half-truths and dog whistles.
The new state law is not an attack on anyone’s Second Amendment rights. It is a common-sense step towards controlling an epidemic of gun violence. To get a driver’s license you must pass a test – both written (you know the law, what is safe when behind the wheel) and physical, eye exam and attest that you have no existing medical condition that would impair your ability to safely drive. Why is this required? Safety. Safety for you and those who might be impacted by your driving. So, why shouldn’t the use of guns be equally screened for safety? Background checks, licensing, tests are all part of a common-sense approach to keep gun owners and others safe.
Stefanik’s claim of a drastic loss of conservation revenue because of the state’s new gun safety law just doesn’t hold water. The allocation of funds to the state from the excise tax on the sale of guns and ammunition (Pittman-Robertson Act) is based primarily on the number of hunting licenses in the state. Additionally, her claim that the cost of the new checks will be ominous on small business is laughable. These costs, roughly $18, are passed on to the consumer and not borne by the business.
Hunting, marksmanship, personal safety are all valid reasons for gun ownership. But let’s be...
