Lula condemns ‘false claims’ about Brazilian agriculture - Valor International

On the eve of the entry into force of the Mercosur-European Union trade agreement, Brazil’s President Lula praised the partnership between the blocs, but asked Europeans to recognize Brazil’s clean power generation mix, cited “false claims” about Brazilian agriculture and criticized barriers imposed on Brazilian biofuel.

Lula spoke on Sunday (19) at the opening ceremony of the Hannover fair, in Germany, where he arrived on Saturday morning. The fair, which has Brazil as the featured country this year, will be held until Friday (26).

“The invitation to the Hannover fair consolidates Brazil’s position as a reliable partner in a world of instability and uncertainty,” said Lula in his speech, which made new direct and indirect criticisms of U.S. President Donald Trump and the war with Iran.

Lula also criticized the work of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and said that its paralysis points to the “need to refound the organization.” “The effective incorporation of the interests of the Global South is an essential condition for multilateral arrangements to be legitimate and relevant,” he said.

The president celebrated the entry into force of the Mercosur-EU agreement, which will provisionally come into effect on May 1st. “In less than two weeks, the agreement that creates a market of almost 720 million people and a GDP of $22 trillion will come into force,” he said. “There are numerous unexplored complementarities.
