Madlanga testimony renews focus on whistleblower protection - eNCA

JOHANNESBURG - The testimony of State Advocate Drushantha Ramsamy at the Madlanga Commission and Emfuleni Municipality accountant Martha Rantsofu has thrust whistleblower protection back into the spotlight.

They have raised fresh concerns about the safety of those who expose wrongdoing.

Independent reporting systems managed by private companies could play a critical role in helping employees report crime safely.

This is the view of David Loxton of Loxton Forensics.

"I think the first thing an organisation can do is outsource the investigation as opposed to doing it internally," he said.

"In our experience, employees vent without exception and take the investigation more seriously if the employer outsources to an independent body as opposed to asking people from within to investigate because a lot of times the people are simply not competent or not able, or there are just too many conflicts of interest for them to investigate.
