Maine counseling organization denies fraud accusations, calls claims 'false' - newscentermaine.com

PORTLAND, Maine — A community organization that provides case management and counseling services to immigrants in Maine is denying accusations that staff overbilled Maine's Medicaid program.

Gateway Community Services is the nonprofit that operates Gateway Community Services Maine, which offers case management and counseling to immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers, according to its website.

Staff with the organization posted on Facebook on Thursday to address accusations made by a former employee in an interview with News Nation. In the interview, a man named Christopher Bernardini claims to be a health services contractor who worked for Gateway.

In News Nation's reporting, Bernardini said "Gateway oversaw a system in which false records were filed about client visits. He alleges an electronic monitoring system designed to track movements was manipulated to make it seem like field staff were visiting low income and disabled clients, when in reality they did not come within miles of the clients’ homes. They then charged taxpayers for providing services that were never performed, according to Bernardini."

On Facebook, GCSM denied the accusations, calling the claims "false," "not accurate," and "full of misinformation."

Staff also said the reporting has led people to try to "disrupt" their operations but did not share specific details.
