Man falsely claims 2 men left bomb near his residence, gets arrested - WNEM

CLARE CO., Mich. (WNEM) - A Clare County man is in jail after leaving a suitcase near his residence and calling police, claiming that two people left an explosive device, according to the Clare County Sheriff’s Office.

On Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 6:36 p.m. Clare County Central Dispatch received a call from 35-year-old Zachery Combs of Harrison, stating two people had left a suitcase containing an explosive device near his residence, located at 1943 Jill Janet St. in Hayes Township, said the sheriff’s office.

Deputies responded to the scene and located a suitcase in his yard, near his mailbox, said the sheriff’s office. With help from the Harrison Community Fire Department, deputies established a perimeter around the house while the Michigan State Police Bomb Squad was notified. While waiting for the Bomb Squad to arrive, police began speaking with neighbors in the area and were able to obtain video surveillance from a nearby house showing Combs placing the suitcase in his yard.

When members of the Bomb Squad arrived, they performed an X-Ray on the suitcase, which appeared to contain a large volume of electronics but did not have the dense material that is a sign of an explosive device. Deputies again spoke with Combs, who admitted to placing the electronic devices in the suitcase prior to placing the suitcase in his yard, said the sheriff’s office.
