Man who hung from chopper carrying Kenyan YouTuber not found dead as claimed online - Africa Check

IN SHORT: A viral TikTok video claims a man who clung to a helicopter carrying entertainer Oga Obinna in Migori died after falling off. But this is false. The man has since been arrested, and the video is promoting a scam.

A viral TikTok video claims that a man who dramatically clung to a helicopter carrying Kenyan entertainer Oga Obinna later fell off and died.

According to the video, the man, from Migori in western Kenya, was found dead in a field. It is captioned: “James Bondo, the guy who hanged on Oga Obina’s chopper found dead in a shamba where he fell.”

The video shows the man holding onto the landing gear of a helicopter as it takes off, while a crowd watches from a safe distance.

The video also includes a strangely unrelated caption claiming to show how to hack Fuliza, a mobile phone overdraft service, by dialling USSD codes, the short codes typically used for mobile banking, airtime and account services.

The clip has attracted over 2.1 million views and more than 49,000 likes.

The Migori incident

The video refers to areal incident that took place in Migori on 13 April 2024. A man, later identified as Stephen Odhiambo, clung to a helicopter that had just picked up media personality Obinna and others leaving a high-profile wedding. As the helicopter took off, Odhiambo grabbed the landing gear and held on for several minutes in front of stunned onlookers.
