On May 27–28, several Georgian (1, 2, 3) and Russian-language (1, 2, 3) Facebook accounts circulated a video claiming that the President of Romania, Nicușor Dan, warmly greeted the leaders of the Catholic and Jewish communities at his inauguration but ignored the Patriarch of Romania. According to the video’s description, this behavior allegedly showed “who the new president considers a priority.”
The circulating claim that the Romanian President did not greet the Patriarch at the inauguration is false. Footage from the ceremony shows that Patriarch Daniel gave a speech, blessed the president, and was then greeted and kissed by President Dan.
On May 26, Romania’s new president, Nicușor Dan, was inaugurated. 55-year-old mathematician and former mayor of Bucharest defeated far-right opponent George Simion in the presidential election held on May 18.
In the video circulating on social media, the logo of Euronews Romania can be partially seen. The circulated clip is cut from Euronews Romania’s live broadcast of the inauguration. Several people gave speeches at the inaugural ceremony, including the head of the Constitutional Court of Romania, the acting President of the Senate, and the Romanian Patriarch. Leaders of officially recognized religions in Romania were also present at the event. During the ceremony, the President took the oath of office as prescribed in Article 82 of the Constitution, which was confirmed by the Constitutional Court.
