Marriott Banquet Staffers Exempt, Not Owed Overtime, Judge Says - Bloomberg Law

Marriott International Inc. and a subsidiary scored an early win in a wage-and-hour suit after a judge ruled banquet staffers at a Nashville hotel are exempt from federal overtime requirements.

The hotel chain’s business at the Gaylord Opryland hotel qualifies as a retail or service establishment and the banquet staffers are compensated in part by commissions, so a Fair Labor Standards Act overtime exemption applies, the US District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee said, granting Marriott’s summary judgment motion.
