Maryland Doctor Owes $1 Million in False Claims Suit, Judge Says - Bloomberg Law News

A Maryland-based doctor should pay the government $1.4 million for improperly billing Medicare in violation of the False Claims Act, a federal magistrate judge said.

Richard O. Akoto has been unresponsive to the government’s suit alleging he used a billing code designated for surgical procedures when in fact he provided treatment to patients using nonsurgical methods, US Magistrate Judge Ajmel A. Quereshi of the US District Court for the District of Maryland said in a Wednesday report and recommendation to grant the government’s motion for default judgment.

Akoto has 14 days to object.
