State and federal officials will hold a legal clinic next month to help process work-authorization applications for migrants in Massachusetts’ shelter system, the Healey administration said Monday.
The clinic, which will take place during the week of Nov. 13, will be held in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. State officials will organize appointments and transportation to the site in Middlesex County, the Democratic governor’s office said in a statement.
The clinic will be “critical for building on the work that our administration has already been leading to connect more migrants with work opportunities, which will help them support their families and move out of emergency shelter into more stable housing options,” Healey said in the statement her office released on Monday morning.
She added that “many shelter residents want to work but face significant barriers to getting their work authorizations.”
The clinic will build on several programs the state already has deployed to help shelter residents find work, Healey’s office said in its statement.
Among them is the state’s MassHire program, which connects shelters and regional workforce boards statewide “with the goal of assessing skills and work readiness of residents who have their work authorization,” Healey’s office said.
