MCMC probes 22 individuals over false claims on global energy crisis - The Vibes

Regulators intensify enforcement against online misinformation, opening dozens of investigations and warning of severe penalties for misuse of digital platforms

MALAYSIAN authorities have stepped up action against the spread of false information linked to the global energy crisis, with 22 individuals questioned as part of a widening investigation.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission said it has opened 36 investigation papers involving alleged dissemination of false news across social media and digital platforms.

Those under scrutiny, drawn from various locations nationwide, have been called in to provide statements to assist in ongoing inquiries, while six investigation papers have already been referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor for further review and possible prosecution.

Investigations are being conducted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), which provides for a maximum fine of RM500,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both upon conviction.

The commission said it views seriously any abuse of digital platforms intended to mislead the public through false information, particularly on sensitive issues such as the global energy crisis.

“MCMC takes seriously any misuse of social media and digital platforms intended to mislead the public through the dissemination of false information. Firm action will be taken against any individual found to have violated existing laws.”
