KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has opened an investigation into an individual for spreading false information regarding diesel fuel being supplied to the Philippines.
In a statement, the MCMC said authorities confirmed that the diesel in question belonged to the trading company Vitol, rather than PETRONAS or the Malaysian government.
“The individual was called in to give a statement on Friday (April 17). MCMC also seized communication devices used to upload the content to assist in further investigations,” the commission said.
The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. If convicted, the offender faces a maximum fine of RM500,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both.
“The MCMC takes a serious view of any social media or digital platform misuse to spread unverified information that could mislead the public. Strict enforcement action will be taken against any party found to have violated the law or disrupted public order,” the statement added.
