FRANKFORT, Ky. —

Medical marijuana was legalized this week in Kentucky. But it won't be available right away, and it'll be limited to people with certain conditions.

When does it take effect?

January 1, 2025

Who will qualify?

The list of qualifying conditions:

• Any type or form of cancer, regardless of stage
• Chronic, severe, intractable, or debilitating pain
• Epilepsy or any other intractable seizure disorder
• Multiple sclerosis, muscle spasms, or spasticity
• Chronic nausea or cyclical vomiting syndrome that has proven resistant to other conventional medical treatments
• Post-traumatic stress disorder

The bill does allow for the Kentucky Center for Cannabis Research to add medical conditions and diseases to the list.

How will it work?

The Cabinet of Health and Family Services will regulate the cultivation and distribution of medical marijuana in the state.

Any of the qualifying conditions would have to be diagnosed by a doctor for the patient to receive certification.

Users will then have to get an identification card. Those under 18 who qualify will need assistance from a designated and certified caregiver who will also need an ID card.

Cardholders will be able to get marijuana from licensed dispensaries. Some may offer delivery service.
