Melissa McGuire is a member of her firm’s Employment and Benefits groups, primarily representing small, medium and large public, private and nonprofit employers in all aspects of employment law.
McGuire provides comprehensive advice and counsel on employee leave, disciplinary matters, wage and hour issues, wage payment and collective issues, reasonable accommodation, labor issues, medical leave, protection of proprietary information and employee good will. She also handles discrimination, harassment and retaliation cases under civil rights laws. McGuire drafts employment documents including agreements, handbooks, policies, notices and authorizations.
What is the accomplishment that you are most proud of?
Career-wise, navigating the new employment environment that has developed over the last few years. The employment law landscape has changed significantly since the beginning of my career. Just recently COVID, social and political issues have had profound impacts on employment laws and workplace culture. Addressing workplace legal issues has become a lot more nuanced than it used to be. I really feel accomplished when I help clients navigate that shift, especially when it results in creative or win-win solutions.
What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned as an attorney?
It’s OK to take a break sometimes. You serve your clients better, and it’s not a badge of honor to spend every hour of the day working.
