Justices of Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court (TSE) and Federal Supreme Court (STF) criticized statements made by Senator and Liberal Party presidential hopeful Flávio Bolsonaro during a meeting with diplomats on Tuesday (21), in which he repeated false claims about the country’s electronic voting system. According to the justices, the remarks sounded “defeatist.” They also warned that attacks on Brazil’s electronic voting system have previously resulted in politicians losing their elected office and being barred from seeking public office.
Flávio Bolsonaro said Brazil’s electronic voting machines “have the same origin” as those used in Venezuela, a claim that Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court publicly refuted in 2020. “I won’t go into further detail, but I want to note that many of the machines used in Brazilian elections have the same origin as those produced by that Venezuelan company,” he told an audience of foreign diplomats.
Among members of the courts, the remarks immediately drew comparisons with the meeting former President Jair Bolsonaro held with ambassadors in 2022. During that event, Bolsonaro attacked Brazil’s electronic voting system and alleged, without evidence, that the 2018 presidential election had been fraudulent. The Superior Electoral Court later found that the meeting constituted an abuse of political power and misuse of public media, rendering Bolsonaro ineligible to hold elected office until 2030.
