Britain’s most senior police officer has denounced critics who “promote narratives that suit them” as the number of homicides in London fell to its lowest for more than a decade.
Sir Mark Rowley, the Metropolitan Police commissioner, produced figures showing that last year was one of the safest in terms of serious violent crime in the capital as he criticised “commentators” who shared false claims online.
He has previously dismissed as “nonsense” President Trump’s claim that there are no-go areas for Met officers.
Elon Musk, the owner of X, was condemned for inflammatory language when he claimed “violence is coming” during a speech at Tommy Robinson’s “Unite the Kingdom” protest in central London last year.
Meanwhile Nigel Farage, the Reform UK leader, said residents had fled “lawless London” over fears of crime.
Rowley said the number of killings in the capital last year was at its lowest since 2014: to 97, from 109 in 2024. Met data also shows there were eight teenage killings, a figure last seen in 2012.
“Today, London has its lowest homicide levels in a decade, and the lowest ever per capita,” Rowley writes in The Times. “Despite claims circulated online, including AI‑generated videos creating fictional violent scenarios, some commentators promote a narrative that suits them, regardless that the facts tell a very different story.
