Meta Whistleblower and Virginia Giuffre Share Freedom to Publish Prize - AsatuNews.co.id

Meta whistleblower Sarah Wynn-Williams and the late Virginia Giuffre were jointly awarded the Freedom to Publish prize at this year's British Book Awards. The recognition marks the first time the prize, which honors those resisting censorship and threats to free expression, has been shared by two recipients as reported by The Guardian.

Wynn-Williams, a former Facebook executive, received the award for her bestselling memoir "Careless People: A Cautionary Tale of Power, Greed and Lost Idealism." The book details allegations regarding internal practices at Meta, specifically concerning political influence and teenage wellbeing, which the tech giant has since disputed.

The joint winner, Virginia Giuffre, was honored posthumously for her memoir "Nobody’s Girl: A Memoir of Surviving Abuse and Fighting for Justice." Giuffre died by suicide in April 2025, just before the publication of the book documenting the abuse she alleged she suffered at the hands of Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell.

Presented by Yulia Navalnaya and supported by Index on Censorship, the award highlighted the legal and financial pressures both women faced. Wynn-Williams remains under a legal order obtained by Meta that restricts her from discussing parts of her book, carrying potential fines of $50,000 for each violation.
