Mexican Consulate warns of false reports related to operation in Jalisco after cartel leader was killed - 12News

"El Mencho", leader of a Mexican cartel, was killed Sunday in Jalisco during an operation by Mexican federal authorities.

PHOENIX — Mexican federal authorities killed the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel during a military operation in Jalisco on Sunday. The Mexican Consulate in Phoenix stated Monday that there are false claims circulating on social media.

Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, known as "El Mencho", was killed while Mexican military attempted to capture him during an operation at Tapalpa, Jalisco, in Mexico.

Cartel members responded with violence: vehicles on fire, smoke, and roads blocked were the images seen on Sunday.

On Monday, the Consulate General of Mexico in Phoenix issued a press release stating that some false claimes errupted after the operation.

The Consulate said the following statements are false:

  • There were attacks against civilians at Guadalajara Airport.
  • The general population in Jalisco was targeted.
  • U.S. tourists were held hostage by organized crime.
  • Photographs showing a plane on fire in Guadalajara.
  • Gunmen took over Guadalajara Airport.
  • U.S. military personnel were involved in the arrest.

"The targeted operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco, was carried out lawfully by Mexican federal authorities as part of Mexico’s National Security Strategy. Security personnel acted in self-defense, and members of Mexico’s security forces were injured and are receiving specialized care.
