India's flagship rural jobs programme entered a new phase on Wednesday as the Viksit Bharat–Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) (VB-G RAM G) Act, 2025 replaced the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), ending a framework that had governed rural employment since 2005.

The new law raises the statutory employment guarantee from 100 days to 125 days per eligible rural household, changes how the scheme is funded and monitored, and shifts its focus towards creating long-term rural infrastructure alongside wage employment.

The Centre has earmarked an interim 95,692.31 crore for the rollout, which began nationwide on July 1.
