Michigan Attorney General’s Office still considering charges against people who profited off election lies - MLive.com

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said her office is still investigating whether to bring charges against people who spread false claims about the 2020 election for personal benefit.

The Republican-led Michigan Senate Oversight Committee recommended an investigation into people who promoted false claims about Antrim County vote totals as part of the committee’s own probe into voter fraud. The report doesn’t specifically point to any potential suspects but does outline efforts by Republican Attorney General hopeful Matt DePerno and others to cast false information as dramatic evidence of a stolen election.

Nessel announced last July that her office would consider prosecuting people who used false information about Antrim County to raise money or attract publicity. In a Wednesday interview, Nessel said the investigation is ongoing but she isn’t privy to the details; the attorney general “walled myself off” from the investigation because it could involve a political opponent.

“If and when it gets to a point where my staff tells me they are reviewing a case for possible prosecution, there will be an appointment of a special counsel and it will be an outside attorney,” Nessel said. “Likely I will try and find someone who is a former county prosecutor and if possible, I’d like to find a Republican former county prosecutor who does not report to me and who I would be unable to influence in any way shape, or form. But we’re not at that point yet.”
