Michigan Republicans flocked to Florida this week to meet with former President Donald Trump at a fundraiser for Republican Attorney General candidate Matthew DePerno.
Candidates for governor, secretary of state and two U.S. House seats appeared on stage with DePerno and Trump at the former president’s Mar-a-Lago resort Tuesday night. Trump said he’s planning to visit Michigan to campaign on behalf of candidates he’s endorsed and criticized incumbent Republicans for not doing enough to pass voting restrictions in response to false claims that the 2020 election was stolen from him.
“This man is a guy who can fix it,” Trump said of DePerno. “There aren’t many people who are around who can do it.”
Videos of the event posted to social media by attendees provide a small window into the fundraiser. At one point, Trump invited Michigan candidates to join him on stage. Among them were gubernatorial candidates Perry Johnson, Ryan Kelley and Ralph Rebandt, U.S. House hopefuls Steve Carra and Josh Bitterman and secretary of state candidate Kristina Karamo.
Trump said he was advised not to endorse DePerno, but called him a “fighter” and “super lawyer.” DePerno, a Kalamazoo attorney, launched his political career after leading a failed legal effort challenging results in Antrim County. A report by Republican senators dismissed DePerno’s claims as “demonstrably false and based on misleading information and illogical conclusions.”
