Michigan's minimum wage set to increase on New Year's Day - WWMT-TV

LANSING, Mich. — Michigan's minimum wage is expected to increase on Jan. 1, 2023, from $9.87 to $10.10 per hour, despite pending litigations that are challenging the increase.

The hourly wage was set by Michigan's Improved Workforce Opportunity Wage Act of 2018.

Starting on New Year's Day, the following price increases will be in effect, according to the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity:

  • The minimum hourly wage will increase to $10.10 per hour.
  • The 85% rate for minors aged 16 and 17 will increase to $8.59 per hour.
  • The tipped employee rate of hourly pay increases to $3.84 per hour.
  • The training wage of $4.25 per hour for newly hired employees ages 16 to 19 for their first 90 days of employment remains unchanged.

The proposed wage increase has seen its fair share of challenges, including a 2018 petition that sought to allow voters to decide on a wage increase.

Voters could have decided if the wage should increase to $12 per hour by 2022, but the Legislature amended the law, according to state officials.

The amendment would put in lower wage thresholds that could increase the minimum wage to $12.05 by 2030, instead of 2022, and kept the tipped minimum wage of 38% of the standard one, officials said.

The Legislature’s amendment has been challenged in court as unconstitutional.
