In an unprovoked attack that lasted seconds, a 26-year-old Redmond man suffered more than a dozen stab wounds and a skull fracture Wednesday as he waited for a crosswalk signal to change near the Microsoft campus, according to King County prosecutors.
Witness statements, video-surveillance footage and a trail of blood droplets led Redmond police to an apartment building four blocks west of the stabbing scene, where hours later a SWAT team arrested Joseph Richard Cantrell, 25, who was charged Friday with attempted second-degree murder, charging papers say.
Cantrell, a recent transplant from Georgia who worked for Microsoft, remains jailed in lieu of $2 million bail, the charges say.
The victim, also a Microsoft employee, later told detectives he did not know his assailant, according to charging papers.
“The defendant appears to have been prepared for this significant act of violence. He was equipped with a knife and gloves,” Senior Deputy Prosecutor Brynn Jacobson wrote in charging papers. “He assaulted the victim shortly after exiting his apartment building. He then quickly returned to his residence and attempted to get rid of evidence of his involvement.”
