Special Edition: AI Turbocharges Hoaxes About the Minneapolis ICE Shooting

Just hours after the deadly ICE shooting in Minneapolis on Jan. 7, social media users began using AI to fill the gaps in the breaking news coverage to their own liking. In less than a day, NewsGuard identified six provably false claims about the shooting, four of which employed artificial intelligence to fabricate or distort the incident. The four AI-generated hoaxes alone collectively garnered 4.24 million views across X, Instagram, Threads, and TikTok. Plus, NewsGuard demonstrates the ease of generating AI fakes depicting the shooting in an audit of OpenAI’s Sora 2 and X’s Grok Imagine.

AI Used to ‘Unmask’ ICE Agent, in Latest Case of ‘AI Enhancement’ of Breaking News

What happened: On Jan. 7, an ICE agent in Minneapolis, identified on Jan. 8 by the Minnesota Star Tribune as Jonathan Ross, shot and killed 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good. The Minnesota woman had blocked federal vehicles with her car and apparently when leaving the scene brushed against the agent, who then killed her, according to video of the incident. The tragedy has sparked a heated debate over whether the shooting was justified.
