Missing sabungeros whistleblower denies issuing threat vs reporter - Inquirer.net

TANDAG CITY, Surigao del Sir — Missing sabungeros whistleblower Julie “Dondon” Patidongan has strongly denied allegations that he threatened News5 reporter Gary de Leon, who earlier reported receiving death threats following his coverage of the case.

The incident was also brought to the attention of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP), which condemned the alleged threat and warned that it highlights the continuing risks and dangers faced by journalists in the country.

According to reports, the alleged threat occurred on October 27, when de Leon contacted Patidongan and his legal counsel to seek comment for a story related to the ongoing case.

In a statement, Patidongan denied the accusation, saying there was “no truth to the allegations.”

He explained that he had merely declined to comment on certain matters due to a pending case, noting that he had already been repeatedly asked for statements on the same issue and was being pressed for answers.

“There was no threat at all. I simply chose not to answer further questions and not give any statement about a case that is still being heard,” Patidongan said.

Patidongan added he only asked that de Leon “be fair and consider the families of the missing sabungeros.”

He also challenged de Leon to present any evidence to substantiate the alleged threat, saying he wished to clear his name amid the controversy.
