Cease-and-desist sent as family of Nolan Wells’ friend pushes back against online accusations

JACKSON, Miss. —

The family of Bart Edmiston Jr., one of Nolan Wells’ friends, has sent a cease-and-desist letter to a social media user it accuses of spreading false claims linking Edmiston to Wells’ death.

The legal letter demands the user stop publishing statements that allegedly identify Edmiston as a suspect, accuse him of causing or contributing to Wells’ death, or claim he participated in a cover-up. It also instructs the user to preserve posts, messages, videos, photographs and other potential evidence in anticipation of possible litigation.\

In a separate statement released Wednesday, the Edmiston family said the letter is the first legal action it has taken in response to what it describes as an online campaign of defamation, doxxing and threats. The family said the user shared photographs of its home, its address, land records and employment information while making unsupported allegations about Edmiston.

The family said Edmiston has never been identified as a suspect in Wells’ death.

According to the statement, Edmiston fully cooperated with investigators after Wells disappeared following a July 4 boating trip to Horn Island. The family said he sat for interviews, answered investigators’ questions, allowed his phone to be viewed and provided photographs and videos from that day.
