Missouri auditor, MSHSAA director discuss discrimination investigation involving white male whistleblower - KY3

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KY3) - The Missouri State High School Activities Association is being investigated after a whistleblower claims he was not allowed to apply for a board position because he is a white man.

The state is investigating MSHSAA for a policy that says two at-large board seats must go to people whose gender or race is “underrepresented” on the board.

Jennifer Rukstad, PhD, is executive director of the Missouri State High School Activities Association. She welcomes the investigation, saying there’s nothing to hide.

“We represent a very diverse and complex state,” Rukstad said. “[The board] wisely said if we are to govern this great, diverse organization, then we should include the perspectives of people who don’t have the same lived experiences as us.”

Missouri Auditor Scott Fitzpatrick was the first to look into the whistleblower’s claims. Fitzpatrick was in back-and-forth communication with MSHSAA’s lawyer for months before he turned the matter over to the attorney general for investigation. He said he hoped MSHSAA would change the policy without him having to escalate it to a full-on investigation.

“We do our job here regardless of what the subject matter is,” Fitzpatrick said. “So, if the subject matter happens to be discrimination against a white person, it makes no difference than if it were against a Black person. It really makes no difference to me who is being discriminated against.”
