TALLAHASSEE, Fla. —
Florida lawmakers have introduced a new bill that looks to better protect renters.
Miya's Law, as it's called, would require landlords to run background checks on all employees and would also create stricter rules for how and when they can go into renter's homes.
The proposed bill is named after Miya Marcano, the woman who was killed earlier this year by a maintenance man who worked at her Orlando apartment complex. The suspect broke into Miya's apartment using a master key.
Lawmakers hope this new bill will prevent tragedies like Miya's.
Her family joined lawmakers in Tallahassee for the announcement, saying, “What is important now is that no other family has to deal with what our family has had to deal with especially in a situation like this that was preventable."
Lawmakers say the bill has bipartisan support and hope it will pass during the next legislative session which begins in January.
