Mourners remembered Milan Levar, one of the few Croatian soldiers willing to testify about crimes against Croatian Serb civilians during the 1990s war of independence, who was killed a quarter of a century ago.
Wreaths were laid on Thursday at the grave of Milan Levar, who was one of only a few Croatian soldiers willing to testify about the crimes carried out against civilians during the Croatian War of Independence, was murdered 25 years ago.
The memorial in Gospic was attended by his widow, family members, and representatives of the NGO Documenta – Centre for Dealing with the Past and the Serbian National Council, an organisation that brings together Serbs in Croatia.
In the late 1990s, Levar spoke to officials from the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, ICTY about war crimes committed against Serb and Croatian civilians and prisoners of war in Gospic during the 1991-95 war.
After giving evidence, Levar was threatened and eventually killed. At the commemoration of the anniversary of his murder, it was emphasised that no one has yet been held accountable for Levar’s murder.
Levar’s widow, Vesna, said her husband did not die by accident. “He was a victim of the truth and of the people he upset. To this day, nothing has been done about that crime. I still believe in institutions and I think that one day or another the truth will come out,” she said.
