Purnima Rao, the mother of 26-year-old whistleblower Suchir Balaji, has made shocking allegations against OpenAI, claiming the organization is responsible for her son’s death. In an interview in the United States, she alleged that her son, who worked as a researcher at OpenAI for four years, was murdered to prevent him from exposing critical secrets about the organization.
Suchir Balaji, of Indian origin, was found dead under suspicious circumstances in his San Francisco apartment on November 26 of last year. The incident came to light much later, with local police ruling it a suicide. However, Purnima Rao has launched a legal battle challenging this conclusion, claiming inconsistencies in the investigation.
A second post-mortem conducted following her efforts reportedly contradicted the initial findings. Purnima pointed to troubling evidence, including signs of a struggle in the apartment, bloodstains, and theft of valuables, suggesting foul play. She expressed doubts about the transparency of the investigation, stating that authorities concluded it was a suicide within just 14 minutes.
Adding weight to her claims, Purnima noted that her son had celebrated his birthday just a day before his death.
