MUMBAI: Member of Parliament Saket Gokhale has posted a letter on X that was written to him by UIDAI. Saket Gokhale had asked UIDAI how many foreigners in the country hold Aadhaar cards. The answer is shocking and exposes the BJP’s propaganda. The response completely debunks the BJP’s repeated claims about illegal foreign migrants holding Aadhaar cards.
Over the past year, Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP leaders have often alleged that a large number of illegal (infiltrators) immigrants in India have obtained Aadhaar cards.
However, in response to an RTI query filed by Saket Gokhale, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) confirmed that only 11,272 Aadhaar cards have been issued to foreign nationals out of a total of 142 crore Aadhaar cards in the country. This means that just 0.007% of Aadhaar cards belong to foreigners, a number so minuscule that it completely shatters the BJP’s narrative.
Gokhale, in a detailed post on X (formerly Twitter), raised several critical questions. If UIDAI clearly knows that only 11,272 foreigners have Aadhaar cards, then the remaining cards obviously belong to Indian citizens. So why does the Election Commission of India (ECI) refuse to accept Aadhaar as proof of citizenship?
