Media Rights Agenda (MRA) has called on the Federal Government and other stakeholders to enact a comprehensive whistleblower protection law, warning that individuals who expose wrongdoing in Nigeria continue to face retaliation, harassment and other threats without adequate legal safeguards.
The organisation made the call in a statement issued on Tuesday to mark the 2026 World Whistleblower Day, celebrated globally by civil society groups, journalists, transparency advocates and accountability institutions in recognition of the role whistleblowers play in promoting transparency, accountability and good governance.
In a statement signed by its Programme Officer, Ms Adesewa Akintokun, MRA expressed concern that Nigeria still lacks a comprehensive legal framework that provides effective and enforceable protection for whistleblowers despite various policy initiatives aimed at encouraging the reporting of corruption and misconduct.
The group noted that whistleblowers in Nigeria often face dismissal from employment, harassment, intimidation, discrimination, threats, reputational attacks, legal action and even physical harm after disclosing information in the public interest. It noted that existing measures remain inadequate without legislation guaranteeing confidentiality, protection against retaliation, access to remedies and support mechanisms for whistleblowers.
