MANILA, Philippines – The ashes of murdered whistleblower Niruh Kyle Antatico were placed in an urn during a quiet inurnment ceremony in Cagayan de Oro on Thursday, October 16, closing days of mourning over his killing that has fueled public outrage over alleged corruption in the government’s irrigation program.

Only relatives and close friends attended the inurnment at the Divine Shepherd Memorial Gardens in Barangay Bulua that followed an emotion-charged memorial service at the City Alliance Church.

During the pre-inurnment service, the Antaticos took turns in denouncing the fatal October 10 gun attack, with the mother of the murdered former legal researcher at the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) in Northern Mindanao saying her son’s anti-corruption advocacy factored in his murder.

Days before he was killed, Antatico posted a letter addressed to NIA officials, calling them out for what he saw as an anomalous P75-million irrigation infrastructure project in a non-farming area in Maguing, Lanao del Sur. He also posted photos of the incomplete and substandard project. NIA subsequently said on Thursday that the photos were outdated and that the project was not a ghost project.
