MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — The city of Myrtle Beach has pushed back against claims of dirty hotels.
This comes after a Tripadvisor report ranked South Carolina as the third-dirtiest state in the country when it comes to hotels. It also found that Myrtle Beach had the highest number of dirty hotel reviews in the state.
Myrtle Beach’s Area Chamber of Commerce and Convention and Visitors Bureau reviewed the report and sent a statement to Channel 9, calling the Tripadvisor report misleading.

Tripadvisor said it came up with the rankings by searching through reviews for key words including “dirty” and “bugs.”
Myrtle Beach pushed against the methodology, noting that Myrtle Beach has more hotel rooms than Las Vegas so therefore there are more reviews.
“The more traffic to a particular destination, the more reviews you get,” the statement read. “Furthermore, the TripAdvisor statistics used are dependent on whether or not a guest takes the time to write a review on TripAdvisor.”
The city also disputed Tripadvisor’s claims that Myrtle Beach State Park was the state’s dirtiest attraction based on reviews.
“We can attest, that this state park is one of the most beautiful sites in the state and one of the most beloved by locals and visitors,” the release said.
