National Minimum Wage increase: operational for most umbrella staff, but brace for impact - Contractor UK

For many contractors, April's higher NMW will flit between mechanical and margin-moving — unlike for some umbrellas, for whom it may be the 'perfect storm' that puts them to the test.

An increase in the UK National Minimum Wage (NMW) can affect lower-paid umbrella company workers pretty profoundly.

For most professional contractors using umbrella companies, however, NMW rises are more mechanical than financial.

Beyond the mechanical, how might April's NWM rise hit contractors?

However, the National Minimum Wage increase of April 2026 may still have knock-on effects for such better-off contractors, ranging from altering pay structures to reducing salary sacrifice flexibility, writes Meredith McCammond, technical tax officer at the Low Incomes Tax Reform Group (LITRG).

From April 1st 2026, the NMW rates increase as follows:
