As false and exaggerated information claiming that school zone speed limits will be strengthened starting next year spread online, the National Police Agency directly issued a ‘fact-check’ press release urging caution.
The National Police Agency stated in a press release on the 16th, “These are false or exaggerated claims, as there are no plans or ongoing revisions to the relevant laws,” adding, “We will provide accurate information to alleviate public anxiety.”
The agency’s press release was prompted by recent online ‘fake news.’ Earlier, online communities and social media platforms circulated card news claiming that starting next year, school zone speed limits would be uniformly lowered from 30 km/h to 20 km/h, and the minimum driving age for personal mobility devices (PM) like electric kickboards would be raised from 16 to 18 years old. Other claims included strengthening drunk driving enforcement standards to a blood alcohol concentration of 0.02%, suspending taxi licenses for ride refusals, and tightening license renewal criteria for elderly drivers.
In response, the police addressed each claim with a ‘fact-check,’ clarifying their accuracy.
First, the police confirmed there are no legal plans to change school zone speed limits, explaining that current road traffic laws already allow certain sections to be restricted to 20 km/h.
